A nature-based science and arts school

Expressions of Interest Now Open

Welcome to Gumnuts and Gumboots, a nature-based science and arts school nestled in the beautiful Hunter Valley.

I'm Hollie, a qualified primary teacher, science educator, illustrator, and lifelong lover of the natural world. Gumnuts and Gumboots was created from a simple idea: that children learn best when they have the freedom to explore, create, ask questions, and connect with nature.

I am currently taking Expressions of Interest for Term 4, 2026. This will help determine whether the program goes ahead.

If you're looking for a hands-on learning experience where children aged 7 - 12 can discover science through nature, express themselves through art, and build meaningful friendships in a small, nurturing, nature connected community, I'd love to hear from you.

What children will experience

At Gumnuts and Gumboots, learning follows the natural rhythm of the year. The program is divided into four 10-week seasonal terms, with each season inspiring new discoveries, projects, and adventures.

Children—my little Gumnuts—attend one three-hour session each week in a small group of just six students. These intimate group sizes allow every child to be known, supported, and encouraged to learn at their own pace.

The program is held on our family property in the beautiful Hunter Valley, where paddocks, gardens, trees, and open spaces become the classroom. To work in harmony with the seasons, session times gently shift throughout the year, beginning earlier on warm summer mornings and later during the cooler months of winter.

Every session takes place entirely outdoors and is thoughtfully planned around the changing seasons. Children explore science through hands-on investigations and express their learning through nature-inspired arts and crafts. Along the way, they'll also develop practical life skills by tending vegetable gardens, caring for chickens and other animals on the property, observing wildlife, and learning how to work respectfully alongside nature.

More than just a science or art program, Gumnuts and Gumboots is about nurturing curious minds, capable hands, and confident children who develop a lasting connection with the natural world.

Summer - Flourishing

Summer is a season of warmth, growth, and long days beneath the Australian sun. Together we'll discover the science of the Sun, build our own sundials, explore clouds and weather, and follow the journey of water through the water cycle. From morning nature walks to creative outdoor projects, we'll celebrate the energy and abundance of the season.

Autumn - Gathering

As the days begin to cool, autumn invites us to slow down and prepare for the quieter months ahead. We'll dig beneath our feet to explore healthy soils, decomposers, detritivores, and the carbon cycle, discovering how nature recycles and renews itself. Together we'll also care for our local environment by creating habitats and providing food for native wildlife through winter.

Winter - Resting

Winter is a season of stillness, reflection, and wonder. As the nights grow longer, we'll turn our eyes to the stars, exploring the Solar System and the universe beyond. Closer to home, we'll investigate the Earth's geosphere, uncover the stories hidden within rocks and minerals, and discover the powerful forces that have shaped our planet over millions of years.

Spring - Awakening

Spring is a season bursting with new life, colour, and possibility. We'll explore the fascinating life cycles of butterflies, frogs, and chickens while discovering how plants grow, flowers reproduce, and pollinators help keep our ecosystems thriving. Through gardening, nature walks, and creative arts, we'll celebrate the incredible renewal that spring brings.
